Lithophane Night Lights

lithophanes are the amazing 3 dimensional porcelain transparencies. as light shines through the varying depths of the etched porcelain panels, they come alive with remarkably detailed images.â created by first engraving the image in a translucent wax, illuminated from behind.â then a plaster mold is made of that carving. next, it is hand cast into thin porcelain panels from that mold and then kiln fired to 2300 degrees to achieve their translucency. it took many years to perfect this technique, and these lithophanes are considered some of the finest detailed images ever made!
